Visited three times before leaving London, first for the opening Friday gay night which I think must’ve been Nov 8th. It wasn’t well promoted and Larry Levan played to a mostly empty club. Also went to the Rosado/Levan and Tony Humprhries Saturday parties, tapes from those nights (and from Pal Joey’s appearance) are online. Last year the club released several recordings from this era as part of their 20th anniversary 5-CD box set, the digital release includes the individual tracks too.

A photo from Dave Swindells website, outside the club on the opening weekend. Illustrates the weird mix of people that showed up during this period: there were some wealthy people like these who I guess may have been friends of the financial backers, some veteran clubbers who were into the music and DJs, some ravers determined to have a good time even though they didn’t seem to have much idea what was going on, and some Londoners who had never heard DJs who could really mix, or an NY-style Richard Long sound system, and sort of stood around the edge with their jaws on the floor. The DJ booth at this time was up above the dancefloor with just a slot window, similar to Sound Factory (this photo was posted to the Wave Music community board, can’t link to the original post because it’s down right now).
